“So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshipping the things of this world. 6 Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. 7 You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. 8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behaviour, slander, and dirty language. 9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. 10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. 11 In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.” Colossians 3:5-11 NLT
Thank you Father that because our new, hidden life in Christ changes who we are; IN CHRIST! Help us to realize more every day that we can’t both have a life in Christ and a life in sin. Help us to kill and eradicate the remaining sin in our lives, one day at a time. Cause us to realize that our calling now is not to negotiate or procrastinate with sin. Help us to take drastic action with sin, as these verses teach. Change our mindsets as we live our lives IN CHRIST. Help us to throw off our “old selves” and continually “put on our new selves” with the mindset of Christ. Please bring about deep change in our friendships, family, marriages and dealings with people in the workplace and our spheres of influence. Help us to be truth telling people. As a church family, help us to embrace that man-made differences and divisions are unimportant because we are Christ’s people. Praise our Triune God that YOU are all that matters, and You live in all of us! May we honour and glorify Christ by our unity.
It is in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour in which we pray, Amen.
“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honour at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory. “ Colossians 3:1-4
Thank you for our new life which is hidden in Christ. For we know that our ‘normal’ lives will one day come to an end, but our life with You will go on forever when you come back. Help us to continually seek the life above with Jesus Christ and not to be drawn away. Help us to live out what we have IN CHRIST; our everything! Help our lives to be shaped not by our circumstances or the opinions of others, but by Christ, our hope in life and death.
In Jesus Christ we pray, AMEN.
“8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. 11 When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. 13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.”
Colossians 2:8-15 New Living Translation
We are grateful to You and Your Word which warns us NOT to be led astray and deceived by false new movements or messages or experiences that draw us away from You! Lord help us to keep our eyes on Christ — that Christ lives in all Your fullness in a human body which makes us complete! We have died and been raised to a new life with Christ! We thank you because the sin and rebellion have been cut away from our hearts IN Christ for a new beginning with You! Praise God, our sins have been dealt with at the cross where every spiritual authority and power lays defeated at Christ’s feet! Thank you Lord! Help this sink into our hearts so that we will less likely to drift from Christ. Cause us to realize more everyday, that we don’t need to add to Christ; but instead to remind ourselves constantly of the greatness of Christ and all that He is for us. Help us to stand together as a church family in this reality and truth.
We entrust ourselves into Your care as we grow in You and love others, AMEN.
“6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
We thank you for the summary of Paul’s teaching of his letter to the church in these verses. Thank you that there is nothing more to add to You. Help us to continue to follow You because You are everything! You are always what we need! Being IN YOU is always enough. Thank you Lord. Help us not to be spiritually lazy or passive, but to be actively walking and maturing in Christ. Help us to grow up in You; that our roots will grow deep and our lives will built up in Your truth alone. Cause us to grow stronger every day- IN YOU ALONE. Please fill our hearts with thankfulness for the gift of our salvation and life in You.
In Jesus’ holy name,
“1 I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at Laodicea, and for many other believers who have never met me personally. 2 I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself.3 In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments. 5 For though I am far away from you, my heart is with you. And I rejoice that you are living as you should and that your faith in Christ is strong.” Colossians 2:1-5
Our Triune God,
Thank you for the example of the Apostle Paul where he opens his heart to us and shows us through his life what you want us to be to each other in our church family. Enable us towards a deeper knowledge in You; where we find true understanding, knowledge and wisdom. Help us as Paul did with the early churches, to beware of anything that might diminish or de-prioritise Christ in our lives; to heed this by keeping our focus on Christ. Cause us to aspire towards the firmness of faith in Christ. Please shape us by this passion.
In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord,
